On November 30, NKU announced the results of the 10th Helpful Mentor Election. After extensive nomination by students, demonstration of mentor's achievements, voting by student representatives, and review and public announcement, 33 graduate student tutors, including Professor Liu Yunfeng from the School of Journalism and Communication, were awarded the honorary title of Helpful Mentor in this session.

On the morning of the 30th day, the election meeting for the Ten Best Helpful Mentors award was held at the Balitai Campus. Niu Wenli, Deputy Secretary of the CPC NKU Committee, attended and delivered a speech. Nearly 300 students from 27 schools were selected for on-site voting.

Niu Wenli pointed out that over the past century after the establishment of NKU, there have been numerous capable teachers and beneficial friends who mind the whole world and are dedicated to educating people. They represented the spirit of Chinese educators through their beliefs of fostering virtue through education and upholding justice to exert their fullest abilities, their moral sentiments of teaching with peace of mind and devoting themselves to education, their solid knowledge of learning, thinking, practicing, seeking truth and innovation, and their benevolence that makes them love their job and those they teach, and willing to devote themselves to what they do. He called on the students of NKU to take their mentors as role model, actualize themselves in the struggle of serving the country and the people, and inherit the patriotic tradition of NKU.

Read more books, visit the library as much as possible, and persist in keeping a diary... Make sure to attend every composition class well. Writing a good composition is really important... A Professor Liu’s guidance is still influencing me, though I have graduated for over a year, which is inspiring me to stay true to my original aspiration and make constant improvement. I am now a basic educator of primary or secondary schools. When I became a teacher, I recalled the moments with Professor Liu and really admire him from the bottom of my heart. His meticulous approach to teaching, serious attitude towards scientific research, and tempering justice with mercy in treating students are worth my respect and learning.

I. I make good preparations for every lesson and take it seriously.

After I started the postgraduate program, I noticed that the blackboard was completely written by Professor Liu. His writing was so clear and impressive that almost all students agreed he was well prepared for class, and the blackboard writing took us back to the early teenage days. Everyone enjoyed his lessons, since we not only learned knowledge in this course, but also experienced his responsible attitude towards lecturing at university class. That’s why we were full of the joys from studying in NKU.

I returned to my Alma Mater after my graduation this year. I talked to Professor Liu, and was told he always keeps the course up to date though he has taught it for many times, as the audience, the times and social situation are changing. Therefore, Professor Liu insists on updating: he writes the lesson plan, no matter how many years he has taught the course. On lecturing days, he wakes up at about 6 o'clock in the morning to familiarize himself with the lesson plan and courseware, and arrive at the classroom very early, waiting for students. I make good preparations for every lesson and taken it seriously! My eyes welled up. I sincerely admire his professionalism, but more importantly, I made up my mind that I should become a teacher like Professor Liu, a responsible teacher who takes teaching and students seriously.

II. Stay true to your original aspiration. You can do it!

When I had to make career choices, I asked Professor Liu for his advice. He first listened carefully to my thoughts, and then said, Stay true to your original aspiration. You can do it! That was a sunny afternoon. We chatted like friends in his office. When I heard his encouragement, I became even more resolved to choose basic education. He said I should stick to my initial wish, keep both feet on the ground, and devote to the undertaking of both my interest and benefit to the community, no matter what significant changes have taken place around us.

“Peaches and plums do not speak, but they are so attractive that a path is formed below the trees.” As a basic educator, I still have a long way to go. Even today, I often contact Professor Liu and seek his advice on work issues. He answers my doubts patiently, as if I were still a student in the university. The spirit of justice and power among NKU teachers and students is passed down from generation to generation!

The Helpful Mentor Election was held to implement the guiding principles of the 20th CPC National Congress, General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important remarks on education, national conference on ideological and political work at institutions of higher learning, national education conference and national conference on graduate education, uphold the spirit of educators, carry out the basic task of fostering virtue through education, strengthen the professional integrity, conduct, and ability of our teachers, establish role models for teaching and educating students, enhance the sense of honor of graduate tutors, and create a good atmosphere of respecting teachers and valuing education.
