The School has launched the NKU Communication Lecture series activity, in order to further promote academic exchanges between the School and domestic and international publishing research fields, focus on cutting-edge academic trends, enhance the academic influence of the School, and implement the relevant requirements of the joint construction work of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee. The first lecture was held on April 18 at Xiushan Hall by Qi Dexiang, Professor of NKU School of Journalism and Communication, and Executive Vice Dean of NKU Publishing Research Institute, on the theme of “taking disciplinary construction as the guide to promote the high-level development of the School”.

Qi Dexiang comprehensively analyzed and interpreted the development status of disciplinary construction in our School from three aspects: the significance and background of disciplinary construction, the basic ideas of disciplinary construction, and the implementation steps of disciplinary construction.

Starting from the relationship between the functions of universities and disciplinary construction, Qi Dexiang made a specific analysis of the six elements of disciplinary construction, the background of new liberal arts construction, and the disciplinary arrangement and opportunities and challenges of our School, pointing out the direction for the School to adapt to the development trend and seize the opportunity to achieve breakthroughs in meeting challenges.

Regarding the basic idea of disciplinary construction, Qi Dexiang emphasized “strengthening own characteristics and adapting to needs; developing connotation and leading innovation; making breakthroughs in key areas and promoting cooperation”. Moreover, he put forward the judgment that “disciplinary arrangement is an important factor in determining the advantages and characteristics of the sustainable development of disciplines, and the development of the publishing discipline is of great significance to the construction of the first-level discipline of journalism and communication”, starting from the three aspects of identifying the direction of disciplinary development, optimizing disciplinary arrangement and strengthening disciplinary characteristics, and strengthening disciplinary team development, based on the disciplinary foundation of the School’s 40 years of continuous undergraduate and 14 years of postgraduate education in publishing, and combining the two new historical opportunities, i.e., the “NKU Publishing Research Institute” jointly established by the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee and NKU, which has also been selected into the national think tank, as well as the approval of the School to establish a doctoral program in publishing.

Regarding the specific implementation steps of disciplinary construction, Qi Dexiang believed that it is essential to focus on identifying problems, clarifying positioning, determining arrangement, and planning implementation in disciplinary construction, find out weaknesses and deficiencies against the detailed benchmarks of the next round of disciplinary evaluation, further clarify disciplinary positioning and optimize disciplinary arrangement to optimize or improve the planning of disciplinary construction, and introduce specific measures, implementation rules and incentive mechanisms to promote the School faculty’s participation in disciplinary construction in an effective way with clear direction and goals.

Qi Dexiang is a professor at NKU School of Journalism and Communication and Executive Vice Dean of NKU Publishing Research Institute. He has been awarded distinguished professor by NKU and holds a PhD in Education.
