Recently, the summer practice team from the School of Journalism and Communication traveled to Gutian County, Ningde City, Fujian Province, for a six-day social practice activity. They investigated resource utilization and publicity work during the rural revitalization in Gutian County. The team also explored the current development status of county-level convergence media centers and discussed how to rectify the cultural-ecological imbalance in publicity work.

Investigate rural revitalization achievements and explore new ways for resource utilization

Gutian County is the first “Chinese modern rural workstation” established by NKU in Ningde City, Fujian Province. The practice team visited a number of local sites, including the young filmmaker station, live streaming training base, the themed museum of Going into communities · conducting investigations and research at the grassroots level, the Red Yeast Museum, and Tiantianyuan Biotechnology Co., Ltd. They witnessed the achievements of local rural revitalization and learned the Gutian experience.

After the visits, the team members conducted an in-depth interview with Lin Fangzhao, head of NKU's Chinese modern rural workstation in Gutian County, and Zhang Jinyou, Vice President of Fujian Rural Revitalization Youth Promotion Association. The two sides exchanged ideas on the utilization of local resources and discussed the resource utilization and publicity strategies appropriate for Gutian County to comprehensively promote rural revitalization.

Investigate county-level media matrix and overcome challenges in cultural promotion

In August 2018, General Secretary Xi Jinping emphasized at the national conference on publicity and ideological work that, We must solidly promote the construction of county-level convergence media centers to better guide and serve the public. The practice team visited the news studio, reporter department, and broadcasting department at Gutian County's convergence media center, and learned from the head of the center about the promotional investment in the local cultural resources and the center's personnel structure. By comparing the publicity strategies with other county-level convergence media, and focusing on how to address issues related to the imbalance and poor quality of grassroots resource promotion in the Internet era, the team discussed how to explore a communication path that centers on political and economic promotion while promoting cultural resources at the same time.

Showcase Chinese modernization through ideological education as discipline characteristics

Leveraging their discipline characteristics and applying their academic expertise, the practice team from the School of Journalism and Communication made a short video of ideological education in Gutian County with the theme of embracing the new by crossing the past ('Gu') and becoming prosperous by crossing the fields ('Tian'). Guided by Professor Li Jie from the School of Marxism, the team members wrote the scripts carefully centered on the theme of Chinese modernization. They tried to answer the question What makes Chinese modernization unique through practical experiences in Gutian County from the theme museum of Going into communities · conducting investigations and research at the grassroots level to the edible fungi digital brain base, from Linfeng Village farmers' cooperative to the mutual assistance restaurant for the elderly, and from the Cuiping Lake Scenic Area to Lantian Academy, the former site of Zhu Xi's lectures. The team combined villagers' interviews, scenic shots, time-lapse photography on streets, and short historical films in the video production and vividly presented the five characteristics of Chinese modernization by using rural revitalization in Gutian County as an example.

Through this practice, the students measured the vast land of China with their footsteps, carried out their mission of knowing China and serving China, and further deepened their understanding of Chinese modernization. Team member Sun Xiaohan said, This is an enriching experience. While experiencing the excellent local culture, I could also apply what I've learned. It was through this hands-on experience that I gained a more thorough and authentic understanding of the Chinese modernization process.
