On the afternoon of September 26, the School of Journalism and Communication held the opening ceremony for Excellence Class for Leading Journalism Talents at Xiushan Hall on Jinnan Campus. Mentors of the Excellence Class, Professors Liu Yadong, Liu Yunfeng, Wang Xiaohui and Zhong Shenjun, attended the ceremony. Xu Zhijiang, academic secretary of undergraduate programs, was delegated by Vice Dean Chen Peng to preside over the ceremony.
At the ceremony, the four mentors expressed their expectations and requirements for the students, and encouraged them to aim high and strive for excellence. They also suggested that the students study hard, practice diligently, broaden their horizons, and improve their comprehensive qualities, as these efforts would help them lay a solid foundation for becoming future leading talents in journalism. Mentors Sun Dehong and Qi Dexiang, who were away participating in external academic activities, conveyed their congratulations and expectations for the Excellence Class through written and video messages, respectively.
According to the School leaders, the Excellence Class for Leading Journalism Talents is aimed to implement the “Excellent Journalism and Communication Talent Cultivation Plan 2.0” and cultivate omnimedia talents in the new era. The Excellence Class employs a personalized and elite training model with each mentor overseeing 3 to 5 trainees, and emphasizes a full integration of theory and practice. In addition to normal classroom lectures, students will also take various forms of research and practical training under the guidance of their mentors and participate in domestic and international academic exchanges through various channels. The School will conduct assessments of the Excellence Class annually, and organize activities for achievement reporting and commendation.
The 21 students participating in the Excellence Class showed great enthusiasm, expressed their intention to make the most of this valuable opportunity for learning and growth. They were determined to take rigorous training under the guidance of their mentors, hold themselves to high standards for constant improvement, and strive to become leading talents in journalism.
After the ceremony, the mentors had individual conversations with their respective students and set learning and practice assignments for them.
