Recently, the Ninth China Data Journalism Competition Tianjin Competition Area Award Ceremony was held at Xiushan Hall, Jinnan Campus of NKU. The Competition was organized by the Tianjin Organizing Committee of China Data Journalism Competition and hosted by NKU School of Journalism and Communication. Jin Bojiang, Executive Deputy Director of NKU Teaching Affairs Office, Chen Peng, Vice Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, and Li Hui, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee and Vice Dean of the School of Journalism and Communication, attended the ceremony. More than 70 teachers and students from NKU, Tianjin Normal University, Tianjin University of Sport, etc. participated in the event.
The Competition awarded 3 first prizes, 5 second prizes, 6 third prizes, and a number of excellence awards. The works covered various hot topics, such as juvenile delinquency, care for women, and green energy, demonstrating the participants' keen observation and insightful thinking on social issues. In addition, the Competition also accredited 8 outstanding instructors and 3 outstanding organizing universities.
At the award ceremony, Chen Jiyin, founder of China Data Journalism Competition and professor from Xi'an Jiaotong University, delivered an online speech on behalf of the organizing committee. He pointed out that China Data Journalism Competition has consistently implemented the Ministry of Education's new liberal arts construction concept, adopted a cross-disciplinary approach integrating literature, science, and art in journalism and communication education, and been committed to cultivating outstanding content creation talents for the development of integrated media in China.
Jin Bojiang, Executive Deputy Director of NKU Teaching Affairs Office, stated in his opening remarks that data journalism, as an emerging form of information dissemination, requires journalists to possess not only traditional reporting and editing skills, but also data analysis and visualization skills, and be able to unearth insightful and valuable news stories from massive amounts of information and data.
Chen Peng, Vice Dean of NKU School of Journalism and Communication, mentioned in his speech that the School has established a dedicated working group for the Competition, who meticulously managed every aspect of the Competition including establishing rules, collecting and evaluating entries, and preparing the award ceremony to ensure fairness, professionalism, and innovation throughout the whole process.
Xue Dexing, an undergraduate student from NKU, and Liu Jiajing, a lecturer from Tianjin Normal University, delivered speeches as representatives of Outstanding Students and Instructors awarded by the Competition respectively.
Zhong Shenjun, professor from NKU School of Journalism and Communication, gave a presentation on how to better utilize and manage data, and master data journalism in the digital age. Wang Cong, planner from Jinyun New Media News Center, shared several principles for creating data visualization works based on real-case examples. These professional presentations provided participants with cutting-edge perspectives and profound insights.
It serves as an important platform for NKU School of Journalism and Communication to host this Competition to promote teaching and research innovation, student practice, and industry exchanges. The School will take this as an opportunity to continue to explore the integration of journalism and communication education with new technologies and new trends, promote the construction of “new liberal arts” through approaches such as “mutual learning between arts and literature, interdisciplinary integration of arts and sciences, and integration of arts and engineering”, and contribute to the cultivation of more innovative and versatile talents in journalism and communication.
It is reported that China Data Journalism Competition was founded in 2015 and has been successfully held for eight sessions. As a professional competition in the field of journalism education in China, China Data Journalism Competition aims to advance the reform of journalism education in universities nationwide, connect academia and industry, and contribute to cultivating new media talents for the country. As of August 23, 2024, the Competition attracted over 2,000 teams and more than 7,500 participants from over 380 universities and more than 20 media organizations, setting a new record for the number of participating schools, teams, and individual participants.
