On the afternoon of November 18, the 2024 Publishing Discipline Joint Construction Work Exchange Meeting was held at Renmin University of China. Hu Heping, Deputy Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee in charge of daily work, and Xiong Sihao, Vice Minister of Education, attended the meeting and delivered speeches. Chen Yulu, President of NKU, attended the meeting and delivered a keynote speech. Niu Wenli, Deputy Secretary of the CPC NKU Committee and Director of the Publishing Research Institute, attended the meeting.
Participants stated that Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and General Secretary Xi Jinping's important expositions on education have provided fundamental guidance for the construction of publishing disciplines. The construction of publishing disciplines is a foundational and long-term undertaking in the publishing field. With the attention and support of relevant local governments and departments, and the concerted efforts of joint construction universities and institutions, the publishing discipline construction has received precise and effective policy guidance. The scale and quality of joint construction publishing schools and research institutes have steadily improved, high-level talent cultivation has progressed rapidly, breakthroughs have been made in the establishment of doctoral programs in publishing, and the effects of joint construction have gradually emerged.
In his speech, Chen Yulu emphasized that building a strong socialist culture is the fundamental support for realizing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. Joint construction of publishing disciplines by gathering the strengths of government, industry, academia, research, and application is an effective path to promote the prosperous development of the publishing industry and the construction of a strong nation in culture. The Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Education jointly guide and promote the joint construction of publishing disciplines, providing scientific guidance for their innovative development. NKU has actively implemented the decisions and deployments of the CPC Central Committee, and worked with the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee to establish the Publishing Research Institute. Over the past year, NKU has worked closely with the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee to implement an industry-university-research collaborative development strategy focusing on the theoretical construction of publishing disciplines, cultivation of publishing professionals, and research on major publishing issues. The university has been actively exploring new paths and models for the high-quality development of publishing disciplines, developed a new undergraduate-to-doctoral education system, and formed a new pattern that integrates joint discipline construction, think tank function, and laboratory empowerment.
In his speech, Chen Yulu introduced the main achievements of NKU Publishing Research Institute over the past year. First, adhering to interdisciplinary integration, a publishing discipline development system has been built with a high starting point. NKU is among the first batch of universities nationwide that offer undergraduate programs in editing and publishing, laying a solid foundation for the development of publishing disciplines. Since 2024, it has been among the first batch of universities nationwide to establish the doctoral degree authorization point in publishing, forming a new undergraduate-to-doctoral education system for cultivating publishing professionals. At the same time, it coordinates multiple schools within the university to actively explore new models for interdisciplinary talent cultivation and new mechanisms for open talent cultivation. Second, adhering to the gathering of collective wisdom, high-quality publishing think tank construction is being advanced. In 2024, NKU Publishing Research Institute was once again selected for the High-Quality Construction Program of Publishing Think Tanks initiated by the National Press and Publication Administration. The research team has achieved significant results with focuses on policy advice, academic research, academic exchange, and promotion of achievements. Contributing to international communication, it has undertaken the evaluation work for closing the projects of the Publishing Going Global Program commissioned by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, participated in the evaluation work for starting new key projects of the Publishing Going Global Program, published a number of high-quality papers on the study of international publishing communication, and striven to tell China's stories and spread China's voice well, showcasing the unique characteristics of NKU's publishing think tank. Third, adhering to collaborative innovation, high-level industry-university-research cooperation and joint construction has been carried out. NKU and Tianjin Publishing and Media Group have jointly established the Industry-Education Integration Postgraduate Workstation and the Intelligent Publishing Technology and Standards Laboratory to promote the collaborative development of industry-university-research integration through comprehensive and strategic cooperation. Fourth, adhering to incentive mechanisms, high-standard support for the development of the Publishing Research Institute has been provided. Both NKU and the Publicity Department of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee have allocated special funds to support the development of the Publishing Research Institute and actively promoted the establishment of effective incentive mechanisms to better stimulate the endogenous driving force for the development of publishing disciplines.
Chen Yulu emphasized that, facing new development opportunities in the new development stage, we will continue to thoroughly study and implement Xi Jinping Thought on Culture and General Secretary Xi Jinping's important expositions on education, implement the major deployments made by the Third Plenary Session of the 20th CPC Central Committee focusing on building a strong nation in culture and education, further improve the implementation of the Implementation Opinions on Promoting the Joint Construction of Publishing Disciplines, deeply explore effective paths for the high-quality development of publishing disciplines, strive to cultivate an outstanding publishing talent pool that meets the needs of the new era, produce high-quality research results, develop the unique strengths of NKU's publishing education and for the Publishing Research Institute, and strive to provide strong support for building an independent knowledge system for publishing disciplines with Chinese characteristics, and promoting the construction of a strong socialist nation in publishing and culture through fruitful achievements of joint construction of publishing disciplines.
The meeting was also attended by responsible personnel from the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Education, relevant local publishing management departments, universities, publishing houses, and industry associations, as well as Ma Changhong, Secretary of the CPC Committee of NKU School of Journalism and Communication, and Qi Dexiang, Executive Vice Dean of NKU Publishing Research Institute.
